Looking for a cheap daily stick car that I have some fun with and maybe put some sticky tires on and take it autocrossing or something. The question is do I pull the trigger on this 1998 neon r/t

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

or do I get a civic ex such as this

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

So if anyone could throw in there input on either of these or if you have any other suggestions I’m open to then.

You get the civic because it’s not a neon

“under $2000 dd/autocross car” is probably the only time I will ever recommend a Honda Civic, so do that one

You can autocross anything. And have fun. And probably beat some haters and punks. That was my old monte carlo. The lolcar. Worked surprisingly well. So my advice - get whatever. Race it no matter what. Buy stock in tire and brake pad companies.

Out of those two, get the Civic. Honda makes better cars than Mercedes.

You should strongly consider an Echo. Awesome cars with lots of space and low running costs and classic Toyota quality.

I would pick the Neon hands down if you plan on tracking it. They used to be very successful in amateur racing. Honda be better DD though.

Not sure how this game is played but I got this e36 for 2. ( it looks better when its dark)

I would get the civic. And I would try for 2 even, so I could spend 200 on a bigger rear swaybar with reinforcing off fleabay. Reliable autocross Donkey daily.

Daily suggests to me that reliable is important, so:

I might look for a 1990's Accord and put it on coilovers. Because not a Civic — they’re ubiquitous and probably more likely to have been abused. I personally like the 6th-gen a lot, but I’m stodgy... And that V6! Not sure what configurations are available with V6+manual in that gen. If you can find a Civic single-owned by a mature person, maybe.

I loved the rental Neons I’ve driven, but apparently they’re not a car that one wants to own?

Without having seen either car in person, I too am inclined towards the Honda. Make sure you look at it closely, though. Especially underneath.

This Miata is in the same price range: http://detroit.craigslist.org/okl/cto/555150… Might be worth a look...

In my limited experience buying used cars, I would avoid buying anything with extensive mods with no shop receipts because you never know if the part was installed properly and there is a decent likelihood had the car was hooned on a regular basis. This is not always the case, but talking with the seller helps determine what type of person they are. That being said, I would buy the Honda. 160K miles is nothing on a car the routinely runs to 250k+ with proper maintenance is nothing. Also (to my knowledge) the aftermarket support for the Honda is much larger than the Neons.

I don’t see a tach on the Civic, which means it’s not an EX. No V-TEC no deal. lol. But really though the EX trans, and D16Y8 in the EX is just so much more fun than the DX powertrain.

I almost want to say get the Neon just because it’s lighter and might be more fun, but I’ve never driven one so I can’t say.

I will say that I always started NFSU with a Neao lol.

“Beat some haters in punks”

One of the best things about the regions I’ve raced with....there are no haters. Run what ya brung! I don’t know what punk is in this context, so I can’t speak to it. But driving a beater and seeing who you can outrun in PAX is a blast.

Punks = E36 fanbois whose car never works but always wants to spreadsheet race you. Which is all fun and good but their car is always puking coolant and needs a jumpstart. On a good day. And then on their own self admitted “good day” they get dunked on by a 1997 monte carlo.

I think you could save quite a bit of money by making a trip to get what you need, as least as far as Cinci or Indy. Louisville would be even better. Rust is likely to be a nightmare on any Detroit/Cleveland car for $2k. Here are a couple of examples from my neck of the woods:

‘06 VW Rabbit http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/cto/5557854593…

‘91 Mustang http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/cto/5557889791…

Haha, sounds like “street racers” in a local car club more than an autocrosser, but I hear you
